pagerank of googlei’m almost sure, everyone of us received a (hopefully) nice surprise last week, as google’s just updated it’s pageranks.

i’ve increased from 0 up to 4… so, this being my first blog… i’m quite happy for that!
in this post i’ll present the tools and methods i’ve used to do this.

1. onsite:
-
i’ve installed headspace plugin: it is the most complex and flexible tool i’ve found for the manipulation of metadata.

- i’ve submitted my site with google webmasters and i use google analytics.

- i analyse keywords that drive natural traffic into my site and i try to strengthen my site on those keywords. i do that with creating more relevant content on them.

- i moved my blog directly on the homepage url. at the beginning i’ve installed the blog on a directory of my site. webee.ro/webeeblog. i’ve moved it on the homepage so… this got me into other trouble:

- i’ve had quite a lot of the pages (113!) into the hell of url not found, so i’ve installed another plugin: dean’s permalink migration.

2. offsite:
- i’ve submitted the site to this list of blogs’ directories.
it’s important to say that some of them ask for a reciprocal link. and while this is not mandatory… it still has impact on your traffic. i’ve discovered that when i misplaced their links for a week. that week i’ve had dramatic drop on natural traffic.

- i’ve created a technorati profile, i wrote some techonrati wtf’s. and received increase in technorati ranking each time someone added me as their favorite. i haven’t done though the linktrain as i want to keep my blog tidy. but… maybe… that would be good for you

- i’ve submitted to mybloglog and selected some friends and communities. i think this should be studied more because this might bring some good quality traffic.

- i’ve tried and used digg and reddit. but i’ve had an experience close to that of vanessa’s. anyway, i have the “share this” plugin… but i don’t really know how much results it drives.

- i’ve gained some good quality links from friends, and from other good designers i found with this post on 9rules.com (9 rules is a designer targeted “portal”. if you’re not a designer, then you should find a proffesional related portal or social site).

- i tried to make friends with other designers, so i periodically share my experiences with robcubbon, and ask for information, advice and feedback from davidairey, milienzo, and connorwilson. (BTW: i’m still looking to find related resigners to link to and exchange experiences!)

- i try to keep my incoming links with the following anchor text: “webee design blog” as these are the keywords i’m trying to be performant

i think this is it mostly… if you have some questions or feedback please submit a comment!

  7. Rudd-O on Monday 30, 2007

Curious. I went from 0 to 3, then from 3 to 6, and I didn’t have to do all that stuff. Of course, now I do it to boost traffic, but definitely a PR4 is nothing to brag about.

  8. webee on Monday 30, 2007

:) thanks for the comment rudd-o.

i’me still happy though!! and… although this might seem easy for one of us… it was hard for me!
now i really hope that sharing my experience on this helps other bloggers increase their rankigs!

ps: congrats on your PR! hope you come back soon!

  9. Pete Dunn on Monday 30, 2007

Yeah, but you’re leaving out the part where you have to know voodoo witch magic :)

  10. webee on Monday 30, 2007

    hahaha!
    yesss… i’m a witch bee!!

nice to have back here again pete!

  11. jez on Monday 30, 2007

webee, you mentioned two very important things which I was not working on all the time, but which I actually really should:
    a) look into keywords and work on more related content
    b) write some technorati wtf’s.

how the fck do I write a wtf?
can you explain that a bit more in depth please?

    cheers,
    jez

  12. webee on Monday 30, 2007

    hi jez,

    it’s really simple:
    - here’s how they look: http://technorati.com/wtf/
    - and here’s where you create it: http://technorati.com/wtf?new

if you need more help with that, i might consider a dedicated post on it…

  13. jez on Monday 30, 2007

haha weebee, I just wanted to post a wtf and got this after logging in:
Doh! The Technorati Monster escaped again.
We’re scouring the blogosphere attempting to find it. Back in a flash!

btw. you got an error on your website:
    Event.observe is not a function
    http://www.webee.ro/
    Line 22
you might want to check that out.

also rudd-o at http://rudd-o.com/ is pagerank 5 for me, not 6 as he says, must be a typo on his side or my toolbar not yet updated :)

  14. webee on Monday 30, 2007

haha i think they’re in a lot of trouble after the whole technorati link train fuss

regarding the error that you’ve reported me… thanks… but i’m not a programmer so i don’t really know what to do about it…

  15. Steve Wordpressguy on Monday 30, 2007

Well done on the jump to 4 - [showoff] I jumped from 0 to 5 myself [/showoff].

I know quite a number of people who went from 0 to 0.

When it comes to traffic around 25% of my total traffic over the past 6 weeks has come from stumbleupon linking to a review of an apple themed wordpress theme. You gotta love those fanboys. Stumbleupon seems more receptive to newbies than Digg or Reddit - both of which flamed me to hell for daring post an article.

  16. jez on Monday 30, 2007

    hi weebee, me again:
how do you use stumbleupon? - no I don’t get paid for every question I raise, I simply like asking!

  17. Steve Wordpressguy on Monday 30, 2007

I just installed the stumble toolbar and ’stumbled’ a few of my articles, along with a bunch of other wordpress related stuff that I liked. From that I saw moderate traffic - around 2 or 3 hundred visits per page. One article then got ’stumbled’ by about a dozen people and sent hundreds of visitors my way over the course of a couple of weeks.
The traffic is reasonably steady, rather than having the word descend on your server with a Digging.

  18. webee on Monday 30, 2007

    @ wordpressguy:
congrats on that PR boost! that is a biiig show off… but let’s face it: you deserve it! ;)
i didn’t think that much about stumble upon. i have created my account but i have never used it too much…

    @jez:
haha. jez, please!!! keep on asking!

    @worpdressguy
thanks… i’ll try that too. is there an appetite for any type of post/article theme?

  19. moxy on Monday 30, 2007

Reading your blog helps me ;)

  22. moxy on Monday 30, 2007

Well I would like some help now :) if you have time please check my new wordpress theme and tell me your opinion, thanks!

    http://blogocola.com/2007/05/11/minimal-wordpress-theme/

    recomendations?
    bugs? something?

  23. jez on Monday 30, 2007

just a plain stupid comment, but I do not like it. the font makes me puke. not sure code wise if it is so seo-friendly as you say. but wordpress in general is.

    it’s a bit too minimal.

  24. moxy on Monday 30, 2007

Ok I’m still learning is just my first theme, but is a minimalistic theme so there you have it… by the way you have done really nice themes, would check them to see if there’s something to learn there :)

  25. bogdan lebu on Monday 30, 2007

“iā??ve gained some good quality links from friends” … why don’t you keep your friends’ links on homepage?

  26. webee on Monday 30, 2007

ooopsss hi bogdaan… in some point in time.. i’ve recreated that section. you’ve just slipped somehow…

you’re back on now… please forgive me!! ;)

  27. jez on Monday 30, 2007

^^ above comment is spam :)

(Reply from webee: thanks, i’ve removed it! nice to “see” you ;) ).

  28. Douglas Bonneville on Monday 30, 2007

Hi webee: I have found David’s and Rob’s blogs immensely helpful. Jacob Cass at justcreativedesign.com should certainly get a nod! I just grabbed your feed and look forward to more articles!
